98 Pumpkinfest Highlights & Results

What a great day for the Second Annual Prince Edward County Pumpkinfest!

The weather was perfect, the pumpkins were big and the parade was wonderful.

There were 43 Giant Pumpkins weighed in with Paulette and Bob Greer beating out Bob's dad and former Canadian Champ Bill Greer by 35.5 lbs. Paulette and Bob's pumpkin weighed in at a whopping 661.5 while Bill's was 625 lbs. which gave him second place.

Third place went to a long flat pumpkin grown by Mrs. J. D. Duerinsky of Foxboro with 614 lbs.

It is estimated that between 3,000 and 4,000 people lined the parade route to watch the Pumpkin Parade featuring, the Legion Colour Party, Legion Pipe Band, the Pumpkins, the Shriners, antique cars, girl guides and plenty of floats and marchers.

The weigh-in was held at Midtown Meats again, while other events and games were held in the park and along the main street. The talking pumpkin was a big hit again this year as youngsters were able to listen to stories and talk to the big jack-o-lantern placed in front of the library. In the park there were games, contests, food booths and live entertainment.

The Bloomfield United Church AOTS men's group had the fish fry wagon just a hoppin' and later in the afternoon, the Wellington Lions Club put on a pork and beef barbeque in the Town Hall. A full course turkey supper was held on Sunday night at the Legion.

Visitors were from all over Ontario and there were even several people from the States.

Several other pumpkins were brought in for display purposes including Bill's 878.5 (second in Ottawa) and the first prize winner from Battersea which was an 832.5 pounder grown by Angus Bruce of Sunbury, Ontario.

All in all the Second Annual Pumpkinfest was a great success and thanks go out to the many volunteers who devoted so many hours in organizing this event.
